Last night in the Wheatie, one particular player kept doling out insults — particularly the insult “pushmonkey.” From context, I took it to mean that he didn’t approve of people betting too hard pre–flop with premium hands.
I’m really not a fan of criticizing other players’ play while at the table, and I think it makes you look all the more foolish when you’re criticizing other players for making a play when they’re the odds on favorite and they win the hand.
Somebody pushes hard pre–flop with cowboys. “Pushmonkey!”Somebody is all in with aces pre–flop. “Pushmonkey!”
Really. If I had aces pre–flop and I had to chip up and I knew that someone would call my giant bet, why wouldn’t I bet it out hard? Sure you can play with some more finesse if you’re in a deep stack tourney, or against awesome players, but really, in a short stack donkament, you’re gonna come out shooting because you know you’ll find callers.
So, this particular dude min–raised into me pre–flop. I see QQ, so I say “Look. I’m a pushmonkey too.” and re–raise him all in. He thinks for about a second and then calls me with 66. I win. Why would I not do that if I know he’s gonna call me?!
I’ll play with finesse against players and situations that warrant it. But against a dude who I know will call my giant bet with an inferior hand, I will make that giant bet every time until he learns to fold.
