Here’s a short list of poker books I’ve read and can recommend to you. They’re more or less in the order I’d read them if I were a beginning player.
- Play Poker Like the Pros
- Winning Low-Limit Hold’em (2nd Edition)
- Hold’Em Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player)
- No Limit Hold ‘em: Theory and Practice
- Caro’s Book of Poker Tells
- The Book of Bluffs: How to Bluff and Win at Poker
Phil Helmuth is the most profitable World Series of Poker player living or dead. His book, Play Poker Like the Pros, is the ideal book for a player who is just getting into the game. He shares stories from when he was just starting to play, and will point out typical beginner mistakes and tell you how to avoid them. He covers hold ‘em, seven stud, Omaha, and even razz. His book actually has the longest section on Razz that I know of in any poker book.
Winning Low-Limit Hold’em (2nd Edition) and Hold’Em Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player)
are the two foundational limit books that I know of. I think that a sound understanding of limit hold ‘em is a great way to start a poker hobby.
No Limit Hold ‘em: Theory and Practice is the best book I know of all about no limit hold ‘em. Sklansky is one of the biggest names in poker theory. You’d be remiss to overlook this book.
Caro’s Book of Poker Tells and The Book of Bluffs: How to Bluff and Win at Poker
are an old classic and new classic about figuring out what players are holding by reading their body language, and about fooling other players.
